Speech Outline
Abstract-1:00 minute
Cyber bullying is sweeping the web and is harming many people and even taking the lives of some. It seems that as technology changed and became more advanced bullying expanded as well. Anyone can be a victim but according to CNN politics it can eventually lead to “bullyicide.” Even though anyone can be bullied it seems that it is affecting the younger generation more than the older ones. With an average of 189 text messages sent daily who knows what is said to each person through them. There are ways of preventing bullying such as do not read the messages or ignore them, but it seems once someone listens to the bully they will not go seeking help. One of the biggest tools to stopping cyber bullying is to talk to an adult or someone of authority that can put a stop to it. At this time states like New York are passing laws that enforce punishments to anyone who cyber bullies someone. This is a great achievement that New York has done and has made organizations like Stomp On Bullying very satisfied. Organizations like this one raise money and host events like Nerds Unite to help put a stop to cyber bullying. Organizations do a lot to help stop cyber bullying, but the people in a society have to do their part and not bully others. If what you’re going to say is something you wouldn’t tell a person to their face than why say it behind the screen of technology? Just don’t say it at all.
Intro- 30-45 seconds
· Good morning my name is Erick Alvarado and I would like to speak to you about an increasing issue, cyber bullying.
· According to the National Education Association “Cyber bullying is the use of electronic technology to deliberately harass or intimidate.”(nea, 2008)
Overview- 1:00-2:00 minutes
· Who gets bullied?
Anybody can be bullied and today it is more cyber bullying than it is bullying. Children and adults are all vulnerable to cyber bullying all it takes it is access to technology. If one owns a cell phone capable of internet service, or has access to a computer can be a victim or a bully themselves.
· How did cyber bullying come about?
Cyber bullying has come to be as the rise of technology and advances make it easier to communicate over the web.
· How does it affect the community?
Victims of cyber bullying go through tough times and don’t want to ask for help. They tend to hold it in and not talk to anyone about the issues they are experiencing. This then leads to suicide changing a community impacting people in different ways for different people.
Focus- 2:00-3:00 minutes
· According to Lori Higgins of the Detroit Free Press cyber bullying is expanding and reaching people everywhere. The effects are a lot greater than people think them to be. Yet the report would also incorporate the statistics of how and who cyber bullying affects. The New York Times stated that anyone who owns a cellphone can become a victim of cyber bulling. Lori Higgins wrote an article on study that retrieved this information:
o 367 students surveyed 63 were victims.
o Half of them bullied back to someone else
o An average of 189 text messages a day
· Cyber bullying not only effects people it can also be something fought over legally. Many organizations like the National Crime Prevention Center are trying to have laws made legalizing cyber bullying and putting major punishments to these actions. Not only are they doing this but they also travel the United States giving presentations on how to prevent cyber bullying which I would like to point out:
o Blocking communication with the cyberbully
o Deleting messages without reading them
o Talking to a friend about the bullying
o Reporting the problem to an adult or the internet website provider
· Lastly I would really like to focus on the success states had, had pushing laws and enforcing them. CNN Politics stated that New York has released two new laws that deal great punishment for the actions of cyber bullying. This is a great success but what exactly do they state:
o Third degree stalking
o Cyber bullying a class A misdemeanor
o Bullycide
o Second degree man slaughter
Awareness/Conclusion-1:00 minute
· Organizations in our country are out to stop cyber bullying and one of the main ones is Stomp Out Bullying. They raise donations and have promoted national Stomp Bullying Day which is on October 7th every year. On this day they ask everyone to wear blue in the support to stop bullying. They work alongside with celebrities like Nick Cannon and Mario Lopez. They are also partnered with Willie Wonka and the Nerds Unite program to help prevent bullying.
· There should be more organizations like this one where they come together to help prevent bullying.
· Yet the question still remains why do people still insist on hurting one another?
· My name is Erick Alvarado thank you for having me.
